Traquair house started life as a tower house and a hunting lodge, visited by 29 Scottish King’s and Queens. This house boasts hidden passages and spooky cellars, fine dinning and a maze in their back garden.
The house is currently owned by Katherine Maxwell-Stewart, the 22nd laird of Traquair. It came into ownership of the Maxwell-Stewarts in the 1500s and has been in the hands of Katherine’s family ever since. They boast their own brewery and chapel. Where they worship Catholicism in private. Traquair house do a number of events throughout the years, opening their grounds to the public
There are two notable visits, one 1566 Mary Queen of Scots and the second in 1744 Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Upon leaving this beautiful house in 1744, the fourth Earl of Traquair and Charlie stepped through the bear gates, the laird Promised the gates would not open again until there was a Stewart back on the thrown of Britain once again. Unfortunately, it was not to be and the gates have remained shut for nigh on 300 years.
