Saint Mary’s Abbey, Melrose, is a partly ruined monastery of the cistercian order in Melrose, situated in Roxburghshire in the Scottish borders. It was founded under the request of David I of Scotland to the cistercian order in the 12th century. It was the chief house of that order in Scotland until the reformation.

Alexander II and Scottish kings, along with many nobles are buried here. Including a lead casket said to contain the embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce. It was found in 1921 below the chapter house site.

Robert the Bruce, is buried at Dunfermline Abbey.

The monastery we see today is said to be built near an older site founded and dedicated to Saint Aiden of Lindisfarne, before his death in the 7th century Saint Cuthbert grew up near Melrose, trained nearby Melrose becoming a Prior from 662 before moving to Lindisfarne (the holy Island). Cuthbert was to become a Bishop, it was Ethelweald who was a novice at Lindisfarne when Cuth entered became a bishop.

Etherlweald attend cuthbert on some of his missionary journeys and witnessed at least one of his miracles.
