Regina and Roberts tour. This is purely an example tour. Each tour is tailored to your wants and desires.
Day 1. Dumfries and Dumfriesshire.
- Collection from desired accommodation. Between 8am and 9am.
- We will leave the first day open for any ideas you have in visiting namesake and old ancestral homes in or around dumfries.
- We then head out to caerlaverock castle, the ancient seat of the Maxwell family. Powerful west march wardens, here will be toilets and refreshments. Its one of the very few castles in the UK that retains its moat.
- Then we head over to closeburn castle for a private tour. I need to book in advance. Closeburn has close ties to Robert the Bruce.
- Please note toilet breaks and refreshments will be taken throughout the day if you wish. There are toilets at every stop we go to.
- Drumlanrig Castle estates, if the Duke of Queensbury has his castle open at the time of year visit. I will indeed endeavour to show you this magnificent castle in all its splendour. (P.s the Duke normally opens to the public around August time. But he has been known to open in the past earlier.) We shall have you back at your place of accommodation in time for an evening meal. Between 4pm-6pm. The name of the town is Dumfries. I do have some recommendations. First Rivendell B&b £45 per night. However I have done some research and have an ancient peel tower that does self catering. I think it’s a 14th century, I believe, former Maxwell stronghold. kirkconnell house.
Day 2.
- I always endeavour to collect you between 8am and 9am. I live in Langholm, so it’s a 45 minute journey from home to you.
- We will go east towards central Scottish border territory. The land of the Border Reivers. Hotbed for thieves and cattle rustlers, my family being one of them, we will hit the Reiver Trail, which includes Hermitage castle, the guard house to the bloodiest valley in Britain, and Gilnockie Tower, the last of the Armstrong strongholds. This should take no more than three hours stopping for lunch and refreshments along the way.
- Afternoon we shall cross into England, (don’t worry, no passport needed) we will take the road to Carlisle and the cursing stone, the Reiver walk of fame and Hadrian’s wall. Will take no more than 2 hours. We shall have you back in Dumfries between 4pm and 6pm.
Day 3. Cruise on loch lomond and Stirling.
- I shall collect you a little earlier today. As we head for a cruise on loch lomond, booked for 10am it takes just over two hours to get to the loch. We will spend 1 and half hours on the cruise. Please bring cash, as well as card due to the card machine not always working for refreshments while you’re on the boat and warm clothing it can get pretty chilly.
- Once the cruise has finished, we shall head to stirling and the Wallace monument, and the Castle. 1 hour for each location. stopping for lunch and refreshments. It will take one hour to get to Stirling from Loch lomond. You can climb to the very top of the monument and see from the top the edge of the highlands. I will drop you at a place of accommodation in Stirling between 5pm and 6pm where I will stay also, in time for the evening meal.
Day 4, Inveraray gaol, castle and Glencoe.
- Collecting from your place of accommodation at 9am we will then head to Inveraray, which will take one hour and forty minutes. We will pass through some of the most scenic mountainous regions in Scotland.
- Here will be the castle, home to the Duke of Argyll chief of the Campbell clan; it’s also a filming location, and the 18th century gaol house, one of the first of its kind. Each one will stay one hour and also stop for lunch.
- Afternoon we will head to Glencoe and Ballachulish and the Gelncoe visitor attraction journey time is 1 hour and 20 minutes. Glencoe was the site to the bloodiest massacre on British soil 1692, 38 men women and children were executed in the dead of winter by government forces.
Ballachulish is the town you can stay in. I’ve stayed in Ballachulish before and it is really good for breakfast by the mountain sides.

- I will collect you from your place of accommodation at 9am. Our trip to Eilean Donan will take two hours, passing through remote highland villages and lochs and mountains. Should arrive at the castle by 11am. Here we will spend an hour in the castle. Eilean Donan was the castle used in the film Highlander, there can be only one. Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert. The castle was destroyed in the uprising of the Jacobites 1745 and rebuilt in the 1920s to the original blueprints.
- Once finished in the castle we will sit down to lunch. There is a nice cafeteria in the visitor centre. We will spend half an hour to 45 minutes. Depending on how much time.
- We will then head to the Isle Skye, which will only take an hour’s drive.
- We will visit the fairy pools and the fairy Glen on the Isle skye Or Dunvegan Castle, the journey time between each one is just over an hour. I do recommend you stay for the night on the Isle of skye into day six. We aim to have you at your accommodation for 5pm.
